one minute too late

Kyle turned, his back pressed to the metal gate that stood between him and safety.  He was exhausted from the ride, his bike some 40yards on the other side of the shuffling horde had his pack and weapons.  he reached down to the hilt of his machete but its comforting duct taped handle was not there.  The closest zombie was a mere ten feet away now.  Kyle tried to pick his way through the group like a halfback waiting for the snap but could see no gaps.  Fight or die.  He wasn't dead till he was undead.  Suddenly, a katana sprouted from the ground in front of him.  He recognized Ming's most faithful weapon.  In one smooth motion, kyle yelled with contempt, snatched the sword from the ground and separated the heads of the two closest walkers.  Knowing that a single scratch would end the need for a last ditch survival effort, Kyle was a blur of gleaming metal and black gore.  Cooper still furious with Xavier watched as Ming drew his sword and dropped it down to Kyle.  Always a man of few words, he gave Cooper a consoling look that at least Kyle could go out as a warrior.  This was not consoling to Cooper in the least.  He looked around the roof top. for anything that could help save Kyle.  He spied the radio tower, held erect with four steel wired stanchions.  At a dead run, Cooper ejected his multitool from its place on his belt and slid to a stop at the base of the antenna. He had clipped two of the stanchions before Xavier realized what he was doing and yelled, "Stop! Its our only line of communication!"  Cooper didn't care.  What was the point if they didn't value the lives that made that very communication possible.  Xavier drew his sawed-off from his back holster and leveled it at Cooper.  "Stop right now or so help me,,,!" yelled Xavier.  Cooper eyed Xavier coldly as he cut the last stanchion. The antenna teetered for a moment then Cooper gave it a push.  Xavier had to dive out of the way to miss being trapped by the falling construction of aluminum tubes and wire lashings.  The antenna landed hard on the roof, some ten feet extended over the killing ground below.  Ming was impressed with Kyle's use of the unfamiliar weapon but his fatigue was starting to slow his initial resolve for survival.  Cooper ran to the edge of the roof and threw one of the stanchion wires to the ground not more than a few feet from Kyle.  Kyle was backing up, both hands on the hilt, swing it like a base ball bat.  Cooper yelled down to Kyle.  "Wire on the ground behind you, climb up, we'll cover!"  Cooper turned to Xavier who was still looking over the edge of the roof and slugged him hard at the base of the ear.  Xavier dropped faster than the antenna, collapsing in a heap.  Cooper scooped up the sawed-off and exploded two caps into the heads of the zombies before Kyle.  Kyle turned and threw the sword at Ming, who caught it by the hilt and stuck it in the roof next to him.  Ming had already knocked and arrow and was picking his target.  Kyle jumped high and caught the wire in his hands.  Ming and Cooper made short work of the shambling individuals that attempted to grab a Kyles feet.  With in feet of the roof, Cooper could see Kyles grip on the wire was slipping.  Cooper grabbed the wire and pulled Kyle the rest of the way.  Cooper grabbed the back off Kyles shirt and threw him over the edge onto his back.  Ming rested his barrage and assessed the depletion of his quiver.  Kyle was practically hyperventilating, his breathing coming fast and raspy.  There was no danger of the Zombies climbing the wire themselves.  Cooper sat back next to Kyle and finally relaxed.  The last fifteen minutes a whirlwind of emotion and activity, he was glad it was over.  Kyles breathing slowed and he sat up.  Kyle looked over at the heap of body that was Xavier.  He turned to Cooper and said, "Xavier?"  "Xavier." Cooper said.
